Blog Post #12: Empowerment Ads

Image
For this first ad, why this would be empowering to women, is because a lot of girls grow up being encouraged to play with barbies, and many do play with barbie. And personally, I believe every little girl who did play with barbie, kind of idolize her. She's tall, pretty, talented, so being already a sort of model for little girls, by having her do all kinds of careers. It's sort of empowering girls to be all that they want, even if it is something people say is impossible.  I think Jean Kilbourne would probably agree to the part barbie being a motivator and model for young girls and accomplishing dreams, but I think she would definitely disagree with Barbie as a whole. She is a doll that is almost sexualized, and she has staunch beliefs about protecting kids from being exposed to sexualization at young ages. And Barbie's physical appearance is very unrealistic so it might make girls want to look like that, and be that skinny, which Kilbourne is very much for the preven...

Blog Post # 11: Romantic Couples

A romantic couple that I looked at is Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler from Gone With The Wind. In this book/movie, I think it portrays that it's easier for rich/successful and beautiful people to attract others, and get a loved one. Along as well as playing hard to get which is what Scarlett did a lot of. But what happened to their love story was that they didn't really last. Rhett ended up leaving her, but the reason why he left her was because she didn't continue to show interest in him, and was swooning over another guy. So if she would've been more loyal and interested than their relationship probably would've lasted longer. I think Scarlett had the idea of fake love in her head, maybe not exactly as it is today, which is assuming love should be like those on tv, but she had the dream that Ashley Wilkes would fall in love with her, and they would be a perfect couple, but he married someone else. And she dreamed that the life with him would be perfect. In t...

Blog Post #10 Brand Identity

Brand Identity is the image that a store or company is trying to promote within their business, for example their values. Such as we talked about in class Target vs Walmart. Target is seen as a store mainly promoting their sales towards modern individuals where Walmart promotes their sales towards families.  A store that I shop at could be Cabelas. I buy clothes there, tools and equipment etc. I would say that their brand identity would be trying to promote their sales to dedicated hunters and outdoorsmen. They consist of hunting supplies, fishing supplies, camping supplies, etc. They do kind of promote towards families by having a special place for good family deals. And of course they most definitely align theirselves with the conservative side of politics. Within Cabelas I will buy certain types of hunting gear from specific brands such as OutfitHER because that brand specifically specializes in hunting clothing/ gear that is for women. And most of the time I have been able to ...

Blog Post #9 Duke Student & Porn Performer

In class we were introduced to a young lady who was a college student at Duke, and worked as a porn performer. Then we saw some of the defenses and attacks that this girl had to go through, in the works of news medias. 2 in particular that I will focus on is the one by The Young Terks and the Take Part. First off in the The Young Terks, they showed attacks that people were saying, also the reason why she was doing it, which was to pay for tuition, but now by being open, she was being attacked, she was losing privacy and respect. But they also were conflicted with the idea that her argument was actually pretty ironic. But after looking at they people attacking her they kinda came to the idea that the people attacking her are probably the ones watching her videos and in a sense are bitter that they can't be with her. Then in the second video, the Take Part one, they really pressed the idea with whats wrong with her doing what she wants? Why do people have to worry about what she wan...
