Blog #1 Justine Sacco

I think in this case of Justine Sacco the biggest thing that stuck out to me is the common idea of how celebrities are untouchable. I mean sometimes we do see in the media how it does seem that celebrities can get away with simple things such as a speeding ticket cause they are famous. But I too am can be guilty of thinking that celebrities are untouchable, mean things that people say about them won't ever be seen by them and wouldn't affect them. We seem so small compared to these huge celebrities. Yet in the case of the Justine Sacco, she wasn't famous, but she was made famous in a matter of just a couple hours, then treated like a celebrity as if she was untouchable by harsh words. I could not imagine saying something and having it misunderstood, then threatened and hated by what would seem like the whole world. I do find situations like this almost ironic though, in a place where everyone seems to be against bullying, but yet things like the Justine Sacco case is still bullying if not harsher and worst. It's completely horrible. Because she was made into a 'celebrity' people thought that she could be untouched by the harsh words.
If anything, I think this should be a good lesson to all who use social media that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it. Everyone can be affected by words no matter who they are.

  1. I agree with the idea that people think celebrities are untouchable. The way Justine was ripped apart because people thought she would be fine afterwards was terrible. Just like you said, everyone can be affected by words.

  2. I also agree with how we view celebrities. We forget celebrities without their fame are just regular people just like us. We just treat them as if they have higher power depending on what they're famous for. This often leads to celebrities getting away with things ordinary people like us would never get away with. I agree with this post completely.

  3. It's crazy how even famous people can be bullied. We think that what we say doesn't affect them but in reality, it most likely does. People can say some really mean things when they have no idea what they're talking about.
